Dressed in Persian clothes, chased by hooligans, famous Indian-born Rockstar, Jordan, barely makes it to a Czech stadium to perform before a huge crowd. It was not too long ago that he was just an awkward uninhibited collegian wanna-be musician with a name of Janardhan Jakhar, who was ridiculed everywhere. His family wanted him to be inducted in their business but he refuses. He is counseled that music comes after experiencing pain, so he decides to woo Heer Kaul, the hottest girl on the college's 'Chicklist' in order to be rejected by her and thus experience pain. Initially he does face rejection from the sophisticated and cultured Heer, but quite surprisingly they subsequently become close friends, and he finds that underneath the stiff upper lip, there is a woman who is full of life and wants to experience it before getting married to Prague-based Jai. The duo hang-out together...

During March 1993, after his Ambassador car is being fished out of water, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Agnel Wilson, narrates to the Commissioner as to how he commenced his investigation against an underworld gangster, Sultan Mirza. He details how Sultan had survived floods in Madras, shortly after Independence; his arrival in Bombay; and his employment which earned him a mere 25 Paisa daily. Agnel's attempts to rein in Sultan fail, but he keeps tabs on him and his romance with Bollywood actress, Rehana; as well as his new recruit, Shoaib, the son of Sub-Inspector Khan. Agnel will find his investigation slipping out of his hands after Sultan temporarily delegates complete responsibility to Shoaib.

Aashayein is the story of Rahul (John Abraham), a gambler. He collapses down just after his long-time girlfriend Nafisa(Sonal Sehgal) accepts his marriage proposal. Later, on medical check-up, it is revealed that Rahul has got Lung Cancer, presumably by his smoking habits, and that he has got only 3 more months to live.

In the lead up to state elections in the Indian village of Peepli, two poor farmers, Natha and Budhia, face losing their land over an unpaid bank loan. Desperate, they seek help from an apathetic local politician, who scornfully suggests they commit suicide to benefit from a government program that aids the families of indebted deceased farmers. When a journalist overhears Budhia urge Natha to "do what needs to be done" for the sake of their families, a media frenzy ignites around whether or not Natha will commit suicide.
